Oro chamber urges government to act on power crisis PDF Print E-mail

The Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry together with the PHIVIDEC Industries Association (PIE-MO) and the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Industries (COCI) are appealing to concerned government offices to address the present power supply problem in Mindanao.

In a joint resolution which was presented to Energy Secretary Angelo Reyes during the Feb. 18 stakeholders meeting in Davao City by Oro Chamber Vice President for the Manufacturing and Industry Sector, Ghaye Alegrio, the Oro Chamber and the other business groups in the city of Cagayan de Oro and province of Misamis Oriental urged the Department of Energy (DOE), National Power Corporation, National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) and PSALM to act on the pending generation and transmission related problems in the Mindanao grid.

Alegrio specifically cited the need to immediately resume the operation of the Iligan Diesel Power Plant and to expeditiously repair the Agus 2-Kibawe 138kv transmission line and the Maramag-Bunawan 230kv backbone project.

The local business groups were happy to note that the NPC acted on the Chamber’s request and that on March 1, 2010, NPC announced that the Iligan Diesel power plant finally resumed its operations.  Another resolution which was acted upon swiftly by NGCP was the repair of the Agus 2-Kibawe 138 KV line, a major transmission line for bringing power into the southern part of Mindanao.

The Oro Chamber and its partner organizations are hopeful that government will give the same attention to Agus 5 as well as strongly campaign for additional investments into the power sector of the island.

“After our Feb. 9 Mindanao Power Outlook forum here, we hope to do a Mindanao-wide Power Investors’ forum to facilitate investment matching to improve the power situation in Mindanao,” Alegrio shared.

Still on power, the Oro Chamber will be presenting its paper on the non privatization of the Agus and Pulangi hydro electric power plants to the Regional Development Council (RDC) in region X on March 11 for possible endorsement. (Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry)
