Cagayan de Oro City (3/1/10) –The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomic Services Administration (PAG-ASA) is undergoing innovation in its delivery of services to address the meteorological, hydrological and astronomical hazards that may affect the country.
During a recent meeting of the El Niño Task Force for Northern Mindanao, Ricardo Mercado, Officer-in-Charge of PAG-ASA, region 10, said these services include those of the weather forecast, weather bulletins and weather advisory that PAG-ASA issues, now and then.
This information will be very necessary not only for the farmers and fisher-folk, but also for the general public to help them know the prevailing weather conditions in various areas at certain times of the day, particularly, the coming onslaught of a disaster like the El Niño.
“We are also stepping-up our information and education campaigns, as well as our research and development (R & D) studies along the meteorological, hydrological and astronomical conditions,” he said.
Meanwhile, he said there are now five (5) regional PAG-ASA centers to do the weather forecast established in each of the following areas: Tuguegarao, Legaspi, Visayas, Northern Mindanao and Southern Mindanao.
For disaster mitigation and risk reduction, PAG-ASA has embarked on the following measures: Upgrading and installation of weather radars and upgrading of tele-metered river basin in Luzon, particularly in the Pampanga, Agno and Cagayan Rivers.
Installation of automatic weather stations in Camiguin, Talisayan, Misamis Oriental and Valencia City in Region 10, in Siargao Island, Nasipit, Agusan del Norte, San Francisco, Agusan del Sur and Mangagoy, Surigao del Sur in Region 13 and in Mati, Davao Oriental and Digos, Davao del Sur in Region 11.
Upgrading of Upper Air Observation Post in Legaspi City, Mactan, Cebu, City, Zamboanga City, Davao City, Loag City, Baguio City and Tanay, Rizal.
Upgrading of Synoptic / Agromet / Bouys Flat-form Observation Post and installation of Community-Based Early Warning System or rain gauges, in partnership with local government units. (Rutchie Cabahug-Aguhob, Philippine Information Agency, Region 10) |
